A 1957 centenary copy of the Tavistock Gazette was uncovered in Gunnislake last week by 92-year-old Marjorie Jope.

The newspaper — which outlines the history of the Tavistock area since the paper started in 1857 — has an 1866 photo of Bedford Square on the front page.

It came to light when Mrs Jope — who did several years helping out people who were dyslexic in the past — was looking for something to help someone locally who is dyslexic.

Mrs Jope said it was found in the old dairy of her former farmhouse, which has lots of 'nooks and crannies'. 'It has been in the dairy for at least 40 years. It's where everything gets chucked!' she said.

Mrs Jope wondered if anyone would be interested in the 45-year-old newspaper, and after being contacted by the Times office to inform them of the find, Tavistock museum has expressed an interest and is getting in touch with Mrs Jope.
