TRADITIONAL English merry-making was the order of the day at South Zeal last Friday, when villagers turned out in force to celebrate the patron saint of England in fine style.
The celebrations at the King?s Arms included dancing by the King?s Brawlers, a group of about 15 regulars dressed in mediaeval attire, performing traditional old English steps, and mummers performing the Ramsley Pace-egg Play.
Pub landlord Richard Penny said: ?It was an unbelievable night ? and a very good day all round.
?The dancers danced extremely well and the mummers played the best they have ever done. There was a huge crowd, and the pub was absolutely full.?
Mr Penny said this was the third year the King?s Arms has hosted the play and the dancing ? and this year the event had really taken off.
?We had St George there, played by Nick Groom. He played the hurdy gurdy before running off killing everyone ? it was all wonderfully politically incorrect!? said Mr Penny, who said the entertainment also included some ?terrific? singing during the evening, led by professional singers Sean O?Shea, Dave Lowry and Barry Lister from Exeter.
?It was just like the folk festival ? we got through 25 gallons of Otter Ale amongst others,? said Mr Penny.
