KERBSIDE recycling is set to start again soon, after the service was suspended in February due to the foot and mouth crisis.

A leaflet containing the recycling calendar will be delivered to every household in West Devon before June 18, when the borough council intends to start collecting recyclable materials once more.

Jill Skelton, the council's acting client manager, said: 'We are very pleased to be able to restart this collection.

'The council is committed to providing a recycling system that is easy for everyone to use, and it was withdrawn only because of the serious situation that prevailed.'

She said there was huge support and enthusiasm for recycling and thanked everyone for their patience while the service was withdrawn.

Replacement recycling bags will be left by contractors during collections — extra bags can be obtained by calling 01822 813656.

The borough asks people with large amounts of recyclable items stored during the last few months to leave them for collection in stages.

Ms Skelton said it was still not possible to resume general weekly refuse collections from private roads and tracks or lanes where vehicles have to leave the carriageway to complete their rounds.

She said in these cases, residents should continue to bring refuse to the nearest point on the public highway accessible to refuse vehicles.

'This situation will continue as long as the borough is designated as an infected area by MAFF,' said Ms Skelton.

'We apologise for the inconvenience caused to people who are affected in this way, but must ask for their continued patience and co-operation.'
