WHAT an amazing town we live in! On Wednesday, December 17, Okehampton United Charity and Okehampton Educational Foundation held an open evening in the Pavilion to celebrate the achievements of many local groups and individuals. On the back of the programme I counted 117 local organisations that have successfully applied for a grant. In turn, this funding has increased the accessibility and resources that these groups offer. The evening served to showcase the many and varied talents that are being nurtured and expressed together with lots of stands which provide voluntary services within our local community. We live in a very rural area and it is truly amazing as to how many people there are who are willing to give their time and skills to offer opportunities for us all to enjoy. If you are part of a community group, then please do make sure your organisation is registered with the Devon Community Directory through the Devon County Council website. The address is http://www.directory.devon.gov.uk">www.directory.devon.gov.uk You can also apply to have your organisation listed on the town council webpage. That way new people moving into the area can find out what is available and how they can get involved. So, if you are making a New Year's resolution, why not make a point of joining a local group? You will make lots of new friends and might even learn lots of new skills. Happy New Year! Julie Yelland Okehampton
