AN INNOTATIVE programme launched by the Alzheimer's Society to support carers looking after people with dementia in Devon is moving venue to the Ockment Centre in Okehampton.
It will start from Monday, June 14, for nine weeks and each session will run from 10am to 1pm.
The 'Caring with Confidence' programme, funded by the Government and delivered in partnership with the Alzheimer's Society, provides carers with a series of free sessions to help them deal with the difficulties they face on a daily basis.
Reasonable travel costs incurred by carers and respite care costs can be paid for by the society.
There are 18,114 people in Devon, who suffer from dementia. Many are looked after by relatives who have taken on the role of carer.
The demands on a carer can be huge and carers often describe the experience as isolating or difficult. In addition, previous research by Caring with Confidence shows that one in five people caring 50 or more hours a week are also juggling a full-time job.
Debbie Donnison, area manager for the South West of the Alzheimer's Society said: 'We are delighted that carers in Devon will have access to Caring with Confidence and look forward to delivering this free support programme.
'Carers of people with dementia are often left to struggle with a host of practical, financial and emotional issues in isolation. Our aim is to alleviate some of this pressure so that people feel better able to continue in their role as carer.'
