ALLOWANCES will be payable to members of Tavistock Town Council for the first time this year, after councillors last week agreed figures recommended by West Devon?s independent remuneration panel.

Travel and subsistence rates may already be claimed by councillors, but this is the first time a participation allowance has ever been offered.

The new system will come into force in the next financial year.

The rate which can be paid to town councillors will be £200 a year, which equates to £4 a week.

Councillors agreed the figure was a tiny amount ? even ?insulting? ? in comparison with the hours spent on council work by most members, but it would cover ?odds and ends? like postage.

The council agreed the allowance of £200 should be made available to members from April.
