MIDSUMMER's Day in Inwardleigh should be a day to remember for both young and old this year, as a bumper bundle of fun and entertainment is being planned to celebrate the Queen's Golden Jubilee.

The parish council is arranging a packed programme of events to appeal to all the family on Saturday June 22, which will be centred in and around the parish hall at Follygate.

Cllr Ann Vallance said: 'After the huge success of the millennium celebrations in 2000, it was felt the celebrations for 2002 would follow the same pattern.

'Everyone, both young and old, had a lovely day then at very little expense.'

The celebration day will include organised sports for the children at 5pm, followed by a 'bring and share' tea.

Weather conditions allowing, there will be a rocket demonstration during the early evening and a barbecue.

Cllr Vallance said the council is not aiming to make a profit, just to cover the costs, so a barbecue tea will be very reasonably priced.

During the evening there will be numerous sideshows, competitions, skittles, darts and a draw and hopefully entertainment and a disco.

The parish council is also planning to present a commemorative Golden Jubilee plate to all children under 16 in the parish later this year, on December 31. The plate will complement the millennium mug given to children two years ago.

The plates are also available to adults in the parish, priced £5 per plate.

Cllr Vallance said the council hoped the residents of Inwardleigh would come along to the celebrations with their family and friends, making it 'another parish day to remember'.

Cllr Valance said: 'There has been a letter distributed to every house in the parish with all the relevant details about the day, including order forms for the plates.'

She said orders for the plates have to be received by April 30 at the latest — the parish hall will be open between 7pm and 9pm next Monday, April 15, to accept orders.

Another attraction at the jubilee celebrations will be a sample of the Inwardleigh Millennium Map on display.

Cllr Vallance said a 'tremendous' amount of hard work had been put into the production of the map, which is now nearing completion.

'Nearly every field has been named and many interesting features are highlighted.

'The finished map will provide a valuable piece of the local history of Inwardleigh at the millennium — family names, occupations, flowers and fauna have been recorded.'

Orders for copies of the map will be taken on the jubilee celebration day.
