SHOPPERS to Tavistock Pannier Market will be greeted with a bright new look, following the launch of a new initiative at the end of this month.

To create even more choice for visitors and residents alike, 80% of the car parking spaces around the market perimeter are being removed, on a three month trial period. In their place will be additional market stalls, housed in smart new open marquees in white, black and gold, and additional café seating.

The stalls will be occupied partly by existing traders and some businesses new to the market.

Duane Carruthers, market duty manager, said: 'It's an exciting time for the market.

'The new initiative will be launched on Monday, July 29, to coincide with the beginning of our Monday trading period for the school summer holidays.

'Along with the new stalls, we will be retaining the bunting which we put up for the garden festival as we had a lot of good feedback about how nice it looked.

'We'll also have additional seating in the market surround with some granite seating and a bit of a tidy up — its all part of making a vibrant, interesting shopping experience for people.'

Duane said it was hoped to have live music on the day of the launch, when deputy town mayor Cllr John Sheldon will perform the opening ceremony.

In addition to the extra shopping opportunities within the market, additional stalls will be situated on Bedford Square and al fresco refreshments will be available too. These are being provided by the town hall's caterers, the Fat Goose, and existing market traders, on a rotational basis.

Duane said while some traders had expressed misgivings about losing car parking spaces, the vast majority had been very positive about the new initiatives.

'They understand what we are trying to do,' said Duane. 'It's all about making the market and the square a really great place to be, and to shop in.'
