WORK to transform Princetown Pavilion into a £130,000 new youth centre is due to start. It will involve renovating the old part of the pavilion and it is hoped to rebuild the poorly constructed rear addition. Builders are invited to bid for all or part of the project. Most of the money has been raised with help from the Devon County Council's Youth Capital Fund, Safer Devon Partnership and the Community Safety Partnership. Members of Princetown Youth Club have been taking an active role in deciding what they would like in the new centre and making grant applications. Princetown Pavilion, on the village playing field, is being leased to High Moorland Community Action (HMCA) which will in turn lease it to the youth club. Geri Laithwaite, HMCA's new fundraiser for the project, said: 'This is a really exciting project and badly needed for the young people in Princetown.  'With a dedicated building for young people we will be able to offer a range of activities we can't do at present.  'We're planning a computer room which will be available for homework clubs;  a music room which will accommodate the drums, guitars and amplifiers; and a kitchen where we will hold cooking workshops.  'The small hall will provide a space for the Scouts to meet, as well as new activities, including table tennis and a comfortable chill-out area.  'Appropriate agencies will be invited to give workshops on young people's issues, including drugs, smoking, drinking, training, employment, finance, etc. 'We are hoping the resettlement unit at the prison will be able to help us during the construction phase and anticipate having it open by the summer holidays.' Work is due to start next month. Anybody wishing to know more about the project should contact Geri Laithwaite on 01822 617457 or 07775 918655.
