BANK holiday racing kicks off at Jay's Farm, Lifton, on Saturday, April 10, where the horses come under starter's orders at 2pm for what should be a hotly contested hunt race.

Trainers include the Heards and the Prouses, with the Pipe-trained Phoenix Phyler as well.

After a blank day at the Middleton, David Pipe will be hoping to get back to winning form as will title-chasing rider Ashley Farrant.

There are some good horses entered in the men's open, including Ballysicyos, Oneminutetofive and Polar Champ, but opponents include Friar Waddon who is in great form this season, and Morris Piper who would have to be favoured if the ground came up firm, but would not be suited by the uphill finish. Sue Trump's Norlandic could spring a surprise.

There are almost double the entries in the ladies' open, including Vercheny, who will be having her first run for a new stable and will appreciate the lighter weight.

What A Mover is just that and will take all the beating, but fighting it out will be Paul Tylor's Guru Rinpoche and Knight of Passion from AlanTizzard's stable.

It will be interesting to see if Impatient Lady retains her enthusiasm after an impressive win at Great Trethew. Lucy Johnson's charge is tricky to train but looked as though she could improve on her first victory and could go well in the restricted.

The gutsy Ronan's Choice is entered in the confined — he can cope well with ground on the soft side and took no prisoners with a pillar to post victory at Ottery St Mary which would have a similar lie of the land, albeit the opposite way round.

Father Mansfield has had six second places in his last ten runs so deserves to get his head in front here, and opponents include Just Sally and Charlie Strong.

Kyalami has the class to go well in the 5, 6 and 7 year olds' maiden and the Heard's Josanjamic could take on the same horse and Think Commercial from the Pipe yard in the confined maiden.

Secretary David Grunsell has taken over the reins this year and reports the course in good order and was pleased that entries are significantly up on last year.

The course is just off the A30 at Lifton. Entry costs £15 per car, including all occupants. For more information contact David Grunsell on 01363 84131.
