Okehampton Fairtrade Group enjoyed a busy Fairtrade Fortnight in the town, with a talk from the Devon chair of the organisation.

The group held a Fairtrade evening at Okehampton Primary School. Sue Errington, the chair of Fairtrade Devon, gave a talk on the work of two Fairtrade producers from Pakistan, who have first-hand experience of working as part of a Fairtrade co-operative.

Pupils also gave a presentation detailing the work undertaken by the primary to become a Fairtrade school. The school is now in the process of renewing its Fairtrade school status for a second year.

They also gave a presentation about their flapjack baking project, and how Fairtrade ingredients are being incorporated into the school's snack trolley.

Mrs Errington also visited Okehampton College to talk about the important work of Fairtrade. Food tech students at the college used Fairtrade ingredients to make refreshments for the evening at the primary.

Okehampton was awarded Fairtrade town status in 2010, and the group has recently renewed that status. The college is working towards gaining their own status.

The small group is looking for one or two new members to help raise the profile of Fairtrade products in the town. If you would like to join the group, call chairperson Kate Thompson on 01837 82537.
