THE first wheelchair entrant for the Tavy 13 hopes his taking part will spur similarly disabled athletes to take up the challenge.

Matt Brewster, aged 39, from Plymstock, suffers from osteoarthritis and is diagnosed with avascular necrosis - a condition that progressively weakens his hips and legs.

But this has not put off the married father of four, from ready to endure the Tavy 13 half marathon on Sunday, April 10. A recent convert to 'wheelchair racing' he will be accompanied in the race by his friend MOD policeman Phil Sinar, who will be dressed in uniform - who Matt describes as his 'police escort.'

'I have undertaken a challenge to compete in around 10 races in the local area this year to raise money for three charities - Parkinson's UKs, the Huntington's Disease Association and the Batten Disease Family Association.

So far I have done the Plymouth Hoe 10 and Plympton 10K and next on the list is the Tavy 13. As far as I am aware I am the first wheelchair athlete to attempt this course.

'It's going to be a tough, physical challenge but I hope by my taking part it will encourage more people in wheelchairs and other disabled athletes to take part in such great events as the Tavy 13.'
