A?FIRST solo ceramics exhibition, 'Opulence', by a former pupil has opened at Kelly College's Westall Centre.

Artist in residence, and former pupil Alex McCarthy is establishing a reputation for his ceramic work — last year he showed at the Contemporary Craft Fair at Bovey Tracey in June, and Origin in London in September.

It was sport that led Alex to Kelly College initially as a pupil, but the inspiration of his art teacher, Mandy Stokes, guided his interest towards art and on leaving school, he continued his studies which culminated in a first class BA in ceramics.

Alex re-joined Kelly as artist in residence in September 2010. Mandy Stokes said: 'This show is the culmination of many, many hours of hard work and dedication. "Opulence" is one of the most professionally presented shows we have ever had at Kelly College. He is definitely an artist to look out for in the future'

'Opulence' is at the Westall Centre until Saturday May 12, Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm; Saturday 10am to 1pm; closed Sundays.
