THE completion of the cycle link from Hatherleigh to Holsworthy along Ruby Way has moved a step closer.
Devon County Council is funding the project as part of its £5-million investment in cycle routes.
The money will be used to develop commuter and recreational routes, many of which will attract visitors for short cycling breaks.
West Devon Borough Councillor for Hatherleigh James McInnes said: 'I very much welcome the new cycle path.
'It will allow people to come off the roads and use the tracks, which is a lot more pleasant and safer all round.'
Cllr McInnes said he was pleased work on the cycle path was going ahead: 'It will be great to have this finally connected but it will take time.
'Negotiations are taking place because some of the land is privately owned but everything is looking positive.'
Devon County Council executive member for environment Cllr Margaret Rogers said: 'This is a substantial investment that will create a legacy for people in Devon.
'The county already offers extensive cycling routes and these schemes can reinforce our reputation as the place to visit to enjoy miles of scenic cycling.
'With more people deciding to holiday in Britain rather than abroad, these routes will put Devon at the forefront of attracting more tourists for cycling.'
The money from the Investing in Devon Fund, which is generated by the sale of Exeter International Airport, will add to the extensive network of designated cycleways in Devon and build on the county council's efforts for Devon to become England's greenest county.
Devon County Council has made significant improvements in cycling infrastructure in recent years, with Cycle Exeter Project alone creating 18km of new and improved routes in the city since 2005.
The English Regions Cycle Demonstration Team also ranks Devon as second only to York City Council for its work in supporting cycling.
