THE sound of air raid sirens and a Rolls Royce Merlin engine brought added spice to the August bank holiday RAF Harrowbeer weekend at Yelverton. The three day event was organised by Michael, Lucy and Francis Hayes at Knightstone Tearooms and highlighted the existence of the former World War II fighter station, which operated from 1941 to 1945. Knightstone was the original watch office in 1939, when a square tower was added to the1896 building. It controlled a small top secret airfield used by Gloster Gladiator aircraft on night exercises. The weekend event included exhibits by the South West Heritage Aviation Group, consisting of Spitfire engine parts and instrumentation. Knightstone?s Harrowbeer archives displayed station and squadron record books, cabinets displaying gas masks, headgear and documentation and mannequins wearing RAF uniforms. Among those also contributing were the Harrowbeer Interest Group, the South West Military Trust and members of Brixham Battery. There was also a living history display. The weekend proved a great success and rekindled many memories. Anyone with information or artefacts on interest is invited to contact Michael or Lucy on 01822 853679 or email [email protected]">[email protected]
