VOLUNTEERS from the RAF Harrowbeer Interest Group (HIG) will be taking their airfield exhibition to two events during May. First, they will be at the Buckland Monachorum Village Hall coffee morning, on Saturday May 17 from 10am to noon. Then on the Bank Holiday Weekend, May 24, 25 and 26, they will be at Knightstone Tea Rooms for the 'Harrowbeer Weekend'. On view at both events will be photographs, documents and artefacts about RAF Harrowbeer, and there will be a chance to try your hand at being a fighter pilot, with the flight simulator. During the 'Harrowbeer Weekend', the volunteers will offer a free guided walk around the airfield at 2pm each afternoon. The walk lasts approximately three hours and covers most of the airfield's remains. RAF Harrowbeer was operational between 1941 and 1946. Many different nationalities flew from Harrowbeer, mainly RAF squadrons but also Fleet Air Arm and US Navy. The airfield was demolished in1961 following the decision that it would not become a 'new' Plymouth Airport. Today, visitors will be mostly aware of the airfield's existence, alongside the A386 at Yelverton, by the taxiways and the aircraft bays that are virtually as they were 60 years ago. The group is still keen to hear from any airfield staff, or from families who lived in the airfield's huts in the 1960s and 70s.
