SHOPPERS and staff at the Somerfield supermarket in Tavistock witnessed an impressive piece of parking on Tuesday when the Cornwall Air Ambulance landed on the top deck of the multi-storey car park. The helicopter was on its way from Derriford Hospital to St Mawgan when it was re-routed to Tavistock to deal with a 31-year-old heart attack victim.
The Somerfield car park was the closest available place for pilot Steve Lee to land while he waited for a land ambulance to attend the scene. The air ambulance?s services were not required in the end.
Somerfield duty manager Andrew Yelland said: ?It?s the first time our car park has ever been used as a landing pad. I think people wondered what was going on.?
Catherine Ferguson, of the air ambulance, said the precision required to land the helicopter safely in such a confined space was testimony to the skill of the pilot and the high level of training undergone by all pilots.
