YOUNG people across Devon have been voting for members of the UK Youth Parliament this week ? and among the candidates is a 12-year-old from Chagford. Christabel Osbourne, a Year 7 pupil at Okehampton College, is one of the youngest candidates hoping to be a voice for youngsters in the county. She said: ?I have always been very interested in making a difference and in politics. I want to make people realise that there?s nothing for young people of my age to do. If we had something to do it would save money in the long-term. ?I want to try to make adults notice that we are here.? Christabel said she would like to see a skate park set up in her local area and have improvements made to public transport which would make other towns and cities more accessible for teenagers. The enterprising youngster, who cites her interests as karate, swimming, climbing and abseiling, is currently staying in Washington, USA, for two months to further her experiences. ?I am going to school, reading books and trying to learn different languages,? she said. Devon County Council?s champion for young people, Cllr Joan Morrish, said she hoped sparking young people?s interest in local democracy and how parliament and councils worked, would help reverse the trend towards low voting turnouts in elections. The elections, for three seats in the Youth Parliament, take place in schools and youth centres around the county until January 26.
