ON a sunny Boxing Day morning North Tawton saw their annual inter-club match in memory of Keith Bird, who tragically died on the pitch ten years ago.

The united front row of Chris Fear, Rod Stoddart and Fred Bolt was a fine sight taking experience to the youngsters, ably led by Kevin Avery at hooker.

With second row Malcolm Pratt and Paul Aryis in fine form it was obvious from the start that the over 35s were going to play a tight game while the youngsters would play a more expansive running game.

However, with the old hands dominating possession up front they were able to dictate play in this interesting and intriguing game.

Even when the over 35s took the lead with a Malcolm Pratt try plus a penalty, both converted by Joe Fewings, the match was wide open at the interval with the youngsters threatening to run riot.

But with some excellent defence by the oldies against the speed and guile of the likes of scrum-half Ross Lawrence, outside half Phil Whale and full back Graham Killick making some incisive runs, it was not to be the youngsters' day.

It was the over 35s who trudged off the pitch, led by captain Graham King, weary but happy.
