CALLINGTON and Kelly Bray's Cornwall councillors have agreed to fund new advisory signs to help reduce heavy traffic on a busy road.
Mebyon Kernow Cllr Andrew Long and Conservative Cllr Jim Flashman agreed to split the cost, through their locality budgets, of 'Unsuitable for HGV' signs for Florence Road, which links the A388 and A390 around Kit Hill.
The road has seen a 50% increase in traffic levels in the last five years. Cllr Long said: 'Florence Road is a C class road and, as such, has not been built to cope with the large increase on vehicle use which has gone up from just over 1,000 vehicle movements a day in 2006 to over 1,500 in September this year.
'Although this measure is a small one, it is the first stage in trying to solve the long-term problem of people using a road that has not been built to take such a large volume of traffic
He added: 'This is the first stage of a long-term strategy for dealing with the issue of Florence Road. Eventually, we would like to see a pavement put in for the length of this road as the area is very popular with walkers and the pedestrians use this route at their peril.'
Cllr Long's views were echoed by Cllr Flashman: 'I am pleased that this is going to happen as I have been campaigning for a long time on the issue of road safety on this route in particular. A footpath along the road is desperately needed.'
The results of the survey of the road were presented by Cllr Long to the town council following work carried out in September.
