A BIG thank you was last week extended to Tavistock Town Council?s works department, for their stirling efforts during the recent medieval charter celebrations held in the Meadows. The staff provided stewarding during the wekend event to ensure security and health and safety issues were covered. The council has since received two letters thanking them for their help. Moira Andrews, Tavistock Charter Group events organiser, said: ?No task was too difficult and every request was met with a smile and delivered in an efficient and professional way. ?The team did the town council proud and I am sure the members of the groups and thousands of visitors to the fayre will certainly have nothing but good memories of Tavistock ? despite the rain.? Pat Coxon, of the Medieval Free Company, said: ?I should like to thank the splendid team of security stewards who looked after us so well. They were both vigilant and friendly, making sure that the encampment was safe and secure by day and especially at night. Their approach to boisterous youngsters was firm and calm, ensuring that no incidents occurred. ?They are all a credit to the council workforce and we were very pleased that they were there.? Cllr Iain Andrews, chairman of the council?s properties committee, said: ?I would personally like to reiterate the sentiments of these letters ? we couldn?t have done it without the town council staff, who were absolutely amazing. They totally entered into the spirit of it and went far beyond what was expected of them.? Councillors agreed the works staff were keeping the public areas of Tavistock generally ?spick and span?, although the triangle of land at the bottom of Spring Hill was looking a little ?scruffy?. Town clerk Roger Howard said the staff would be asked to strim the long grass but there was little point carrying out too much work in the area, as Devon County Council would be carrying out highway works in the area shortly. Councillors also expressed concern at the number of banners which appeared on Drake?s Statue. It was agreed there should be a policy of ?zero tolerance? on such banners and works staff should carry out regular banner patrols.
