MESSAGES to Johannesburg have been sent by West Devon schoolchildren to celebrate the World Summit.
Poems and messages went on display at the Methodist Hall in Chapel Street, Tavistock, last Saturday at an event organised by WestDEN to mark the summit.
Children from Milton Abbot, Buckland Monachorum, Hatherleigh, Lydford and Tavistock College all sent their 'Messages to Johannesburg' in the form of poems, pictures and essays.
Children at Gulworthy School created a 40-foot banner showing 300 people — to represent the number of people who share one clean drinking water tap in parts of Kenya — which was also displayed at the Methodist Hall.
Children and adults were able to make wonderful creations from scrap material with Steve Newton from Artworks in Okehampton.
Richard Philips, the mayor of West Devon, opened the event before young people expressed their hopes for the future and read some of their poems.
On the following evening, local action for global change was celebrated with a gig by local bands Souled Out and Sideez at the Nicholl's Hall in Lydford.
