AN aspiring hairdresser is celebrating after wowing the judges with her creativity to win first place in her category in an annual hair competition. Charlotte Sloman, a level two apprentice hairdresser at The Cutting Company in Yelverton who attends GHQ Training in Plymouth, took part in the GHQ Training Hollywood Premier Hair Competition last week. The category for Charlotte's year was titled 'Past, Present and Future' and she created a futuristic design with afro hair on her model and work colleague, Ruth Rogers. Charlotte, 19, said she had to colour and cut her model's hair before creating the style for the competition, and looked online for ideas beforehand and took inspiration from the Hunger Games film. She said: 'The hairstyle I wanted to go for was a perfect round afro but it didn't look quite right so I played around with it to make it into a flat-top. Then I made some of it gold and used a triangle theme to create the futuristic look — everyone said she looked like Grace Jones.' Charlotte practised for around three weeks before the show, and spent most of the day of the show creating it. Charlotte was crowned winner of her level two group and was awarded with a trophy. 'I was so shocked to win because I didn't think I would at all. This award will be really good for my CV as it shows that I am creative and can do avant garde hair styles — it has also really helped my confidence!'
