AFTER a short time away from Okehampton I discover what appears to be construction work for a set of traffic lights at the junction of Mill Road with East Street.

I do hope that my interpretation is incorrect, as I cannot think that any authority in its right senses would approve such a waste of public money.

In my opinion lights are quite unnecessary as the drivers emerging from Mill Road have a clear view of traffic on East Street and I have never seen more than two or three cars waiting to emerge.

We already have three sets of lights and a further set will reduce the flow of traffic through the town to what it was prior to the by-pass.

A final thought is the deprivation of access to the shops on the north side of East Street whose trade will be seriously affected.

ARE the powers-that-be in Okehampton trying to completely discourage the motorist?

Little by little it is getting more difficult and longer in time to drive through Okehampton. Not content with the car park problems we are now faced with a crazy scheme outside Wongs Fish Bar.

To get back to North Tawton we are now expected to veer sharply to the right straight into the path of oncoming motorists then turn left to meet Crediton Road before the roundabout. But where is the road? Where is the pavement? Traffic behind a vehicle turning left, on their way up Exeter Road, has to slow down almost to a halt.

What with the ever-increasing cost of fuel the answer must be, give it a miss, shop locally.

One last thought; instead of spending thousands of pounds on so-called improvement schemes, speed bumps included, would it not be better to spend a few hundred pounds on filling in all the potholes in the roads?
