EXBOURNE resident Peter Harket has had more success at the Chelsea Flower Show, winning the prestigious best in show award and two gold awards at the event in May. It is the fourth year running Peter has won awards at the event.
Peter worked as a project manager for Crocus on two gardens at the show, the Laurent-Perrier garden, and the Daily Telegraph garden, which won the coveted best in show award.
He led the organisation and construction of the two gardens, working with designers to help lay out the plants and displays.
Peter said: 'It's been great to win awards again at the show, as there's an awful lot of work that goes into these gardens. We start work at Christmas, just to meet up with designers, start to organise plants, machines and all the necessary plans needed.
'We start on the site in early May, and have 17 days to put the gardens together. It takes a lot of careful planning before this stage to make sure things fall into place.'
The Telegraph's garden was designed by Cleve West, who opted for a sunken gravel garden with traditional dry stone walls and modern sculptural columns against a backdrop of flowers, herbs and parsnips from Cleve's own allotment.
The Laurent-Perrier garden was designed by Luciano Guibillei, and had another local link as it contained carved boulders by Drewsteignton artist Peter Randell-Page.
Peter explained how the earthquake and tsunami disaster that recently hit Japan nearly disrupted their plans: 'Pivotal to the garden's design in a bamboo pavilion, designed by Japanese artist Kengo Kuma.
'The parts were being made in Japan, with the intention to ship them here before the earthquake so we could construct the pavilion here.
'However, the parts were shipped late, and when Japan was hit by the tsunami disaster, we thought the worst.
'Thankfully for us, the pieces arrived on the first day of construction of the garden. It was a close shave, but a massive relief.'
Peter runs his own business, PH Landscaping, as well as working for Crocus. For further details on the prize-winning gardens or his other work, please call Peter on 01837 851676 or visit http://www.crocus.co.uk">www.crocus.co.uk
