TAVISTOCK Tennis Club last Saturday held its annual tournament finals, fine weather allowing all events to be completed.

There were tough matches with some new winners as well as runners-up and a good turn-out of spectators.

In the morning there was the traditional competition where parents play with their children in doubles, followed by the older junior categories — the younger ones having been played off two weeks earlier — then in the afternoon the seniors.

Results: parents/children doubles: after preliminary rounds, Alan Bruce and son Tom beat Roger Downing and daughter Cathy (one set).

Juniors: girls' singles, 12 years and under: Katherine Chalmers beat Amy Jinman; 14 years and under Joanne Salmon beat Roz Watts; 18 years and under, Sara Whyman beat Katy Bruce 6-3, 6-2.

Boys' singles: 12 years and under Olly Cowan d'Arcy beat Peter Allan; 14 years and under James Martin beat Russell Rice; under 18 years Duncan Law beat Josh Sutton 6-2, 0-6, 7-6, which was a close match and a pleasure to watch, Duncan winning for the third year running.

Doubles under 18 (boys only this year), Russell Rice and Tom Bruce beat Nick Simpson and James Martin 7-6, 1-6, 6-4 in another entertaining match with some tremendous rallies.

Men's singles: Simon Thomas beat Phil Harbottle 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 in a very close encounter with some exhausting rallies, Simon pulling back from two match points down at one stage!

Ladies' singles: Annie Jefferies beat Katy Bruce 6-4, 6-2, winning the title for the fifth time. Katy did well to reach the final entering as a junior.

Men's doubles: Chris Poole and Duncan Law beat Ray Hinton and Bill Sparks 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 in a hard fought and balanced match. It was third time lucky for Chris, having been a finalist twice before and a good performance by Duncan entering as a junior who more than held his own with the seniors.

Ladies doubles: Debbie Mayne and Viv Iles beat Annie Jefferies and Pat Pope (playing in her first final), 7-6, 6-4 in an entertaining match especially the first crucial set.

Mixed doubles (veterans): husband and wife partnership Barbara and Rod Watson beat Debbie Mayne and John Warne 6-4, 6-4 in a match closer that the score depicts with some cunning play at times as the players know each other's games so well.

Club president, Norma Woodcock, presented the cups which as well as the winners included the junior captain's cups for Katy Bruce (girls) and Duncan Law (boys) who also received the player of the year award.

The day was rounded off in the evening with a barbecue hosted by Richard Reed.
