A WEST Devon girl, who was thinking of following in her father's footsteps by joining the Army, had an insight into life in the forces recently at a week-long work experience course.
Anica Bussell, 16, of Beaworthy, along with 39 other teenagers, attended the course for potential officers at the Army Training Regiment establishment in Winchester.
It included classroom study and physical activities such as an assault course, physical training and swimming. The students also met an Army padre and had discussions with instructors and other Army officers about the wide range of careers available in the forces.
Anica, a Plymouth High School for Girls pupil, who is awaiting the results of her ten GCSE exams, found the course helpful. 'I wanted an insight into the Army and some experience of what they do. I enjoyed the rifle shooting and swimming and also dining in the officers' mess.'
The course is sponsored by the director of Army recruiting Brigadier Simon Young, who addressed the group after their log run and assault course competition. He outlined his own areas of responsibility and praised the students' efforts and the team spirit generated in the short time they had been together.
