ANYONE for pudding? Villagers in Belstone are keen to hear from more devotees of classic British desserts such as steamed pudding, spotted dick and apple crumble. The Belstone Pudding Club is holding its inaugural meeting in the village hall on Saturday, March 4, at 7.30pm, where they will share hearty helpings of bread and butter pudding, plum duff and other traditional favourites all served with oodles of custard. Marion Walpole, who is launching the club said: ?A lot of people seem to like the idea, when I mention the puddings we are going to be having, they say ?Oh, I haven?t had that in ages.? ?Puddings seem to be more of a man thing than a lady thing, I don?t know if it is something to do with boarding school, but the men seem to be the most enthusiastic for those puddings you don?t see so much anymore.? Marion and a friend have been scouring recipe books for the most authentic, stickiest, wickedest puddings and are committed to spending hours grating, mixing, steaming and baking to produce the sort of treats that are so frowned upon by the food police. And there is no need to feel guilty about all this indulgence, as it is all for a good cause, with proceeds going to village hall funds. Marion said she was hoping if the club proved a success, it could meet on a quarterly basis. She said the original idea came from hearing mention of a pudding club being run by a hotel in Gloucestershire, on a recent radio programme. To tuck in, all you need do is purchase a ticket, at £5 a head, by Thursday, March 2, as the club?s cooks need to know how many to cater for. Marion?s advice is for only a light supper to be consumed at home before sitting down in the hall, thus leaving plenty of space for second helpings! Tickets are available by calling Marion Walpole on 01837 840498.
