CAR parking spaces in Tavistock's Guildhall car park may be a little easier to maneouvre into in future, following an investigation by the town council. Cllr Mandy Govier, chairman of the council's properties committee, last week issued a plea to the town's works superintendent. Cllr Govier told members she was sure the marked spaces in the car park were smaller than average. 'Even for people with little cars there's not enough room to park very easily,' said Cllr Govier, who felt it was hard on motorists who ran the risk of their cars getting 'dented and scratched' as they attempted to squeeze into spaces. Cllr Debo Sellis suggested it might be easier if the car parking spaces were not delineated at all. 'Let people use their common sense,' she said. Cllr David Best said: 'I agree the bays are very narrow, but how many spaces would be lost if we made them bigger? And what's happened about moving the war memorial?' Cllr Ted Sherrell said: 'I have some sympathy with those who are having problems, but on the other hand, can you imagine the headlines — "Town council cuts parking spaces"?' Town clerk Roger Howard told the committee that the size of the parking spaces in Guildhall car park had been debated by the council some time ago. He said the spaces were smaller than Devon County Council standard-sized parking bays, but that previously, members had agreed the number of spaces available was a priority. Works superintendent Wayne Southall said he would investigate the measurements of the car park and spaces and see if, with a 'slight tweak', the bays could be made slightly larger, without affecting the total number of spaces. The committee heard the war memorial could not now be moved, as it had recently been listed.
