A memorable day was had by all from the special constabulary last month when they took the lead in policing incidents in West Devon.
The 'specials day' saw special constables, supported by other police officers, attend and deal with a variety of incidents, including road traffic collisions, reports of missing people, burglary and criminal damage.
'Specials' are unpaid volunteers who give up their time to support other police officers throughout the force.
There are currently more than 500 specials in the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary who play a vital role, working alongside police neighbourhood officers and specialists such as traffic officers.
Specials receive comprehensive training in areas such as legislation, police procedure, officer safety and first aid and when on duty they have the same powers as other police officers.
Special Chief Inspector Barry Pyke, who leads the special Constabulary in West Devon, said: 'The specials day has shown the full range of skills that the specials have and the unique contribution that the specials make to policing and community safety in West Devon.'
Devon and Cornwall Police are keen to hear from anyone wishing to become a special constable. For more information contact the Special Constabulary Recruiting office on 01392 452589 or e-mail [email protected]">[email protected]
