ONE of the most important postcard archives of all time, depicting Devon from 1900 ? 1960 will go under the hammer in a national auction in the coming months. This collection of 10,000 postcards, all taken by Chapman of Dawlish, was put together by one-time Devon resident Peter Kernick and offers a fascinating insight into the history of the county. Featuring numerous small villages and towns in West Devon, and towns including Torquay, Brixham and Dawlish, it also contains many views of Dartmoor and Exmoor. According to auctioneer, Trevor Vennett-Smith, the collection should be of major interest to libraries, museums and county archives. ?What we have here is a slice of social history, taken by the same photographer, chronicling the people, streets and countryside over 60 years. It is a rare pleasure to be able to offer such a collection,? said Trevor. A small selection will be sold at the company?s September auction, followed by the remainder in October and December. Anyone wishing for more information regarding this unique collection can contact Vennett-Smith Auctioneers in Nottingham on 0115 983 0541.
