WEST Devon folk arts charity Wren Music presents a rare chance to experience Peggy Seeger, one of the world's greatest folk singers from the USA, live in concert in Okehampton next Monday, May 5. The concert will be held in the intimate setting and excellent acoustics of Fairplace Church. Peggy Seeger is considered to be among North America's finest female folk singers, and was a leading figure in the British folk music revival, championing the music with her late partner Ewan MacColl — he wrote The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, inspired by her. They gave concerts, conducted workshops and toured in Britain and abroad as singers of traditional and contemporary songs from 1957 until his death in 1989, since which time Peggy has pursued her solo career. She has been described by Folk Roots magazine as 'one of the most important people who ever graced and shaped the British folk scene'. The concert will start at 8pm. Thanks to the support of Devon County Council and Arts Council England South West, tickets for the concert are only £8, with a concessionary rate of £6 for students and people receiving income-related benefits. Tickets are available from Wren Music, 1 St James Street, Okehampton or on the door on the night. Tickets can be reserved by telephoning Wren on 01837 53754.
