Okehampton Royal British Legion Club has just announced the biggest amount of money collected in the area ever.

The Poppy Appeal for 2001 — the year ends on May 31 — raised a total of £6,372 in Okehampton, Belstone and Lydford, and £927 in Lifton.

Committee member Les Gratton said the branch was 'very grateful' to all those people who worked so hard to collect on behalf of the appeal.

The Okehampton Royal British Legion Club has been going for 20 years.

Mr Gratton said the club was inviting people to have their name added to the list of 'founders' of the Okehampton branch.

'Please contact the club as it is its intention to install a commemorative plaque as recognition and thanks to those people whose help enabled the club to be established,' he said.

Already there are 30 names on the list.
