A WEST Devon charity welcomed visitors to the official opening of its new community centre recently, offering guests a chance to look at the facilities.
A large number of people attended the official opening of the Make a Difference Community Centre at Trident House in Tavistock, which offers support and company to people who have mental health problems.
The new centre boasts a lounge room with a television and Nintendo Wii, a games room with an interchangeable snooker, pool and table tennis table, an art room where art tutors will give regular lessons, and a treatment room where visitors can receive various treatments, including reflexology, aromatherapy, manicures and facials.
The centre also has two computers and a laptop with internet access, and the charity is hoping to get funding for an IT tutor soon.
Sandy Edney, founder of the charity, said although only just officially opened, the centre had been open and in use for a couple of weeks beforehand: 'Everyday we've been open — we've had about 20 people in a day. To me that is a success.
'A lot of people come here for company, interaction and to have a bit of fun — it gives them confidence. They may be anxious at first but as time goes on they relax, make friends and I've seen people come out of themselves, which is brilliant.'
Sandy said the centre is open to anybody: 'Most people have had some kind of mental health problem even if it's just mild depression. A quarter of the population seek help for mental health issues.'
Bill Papworth, owner of Trident House in Taylor Square said: 'I've always wanted the building to be of good use and used for the community. This is fantastic.'
Sandy said the help of her 'right hand', Jay Weston, was invaluable in setting up the community centre.
Already equipped with disabled access and a disabled toilet, the charity is currently trying to find funding for a stair lift, and has also applied to the council for a drop down curb at the entrance, which will allow everyone to access all areas of the building.
The charity is also seeking volunteers to help out at the centre. Anyone who is able to spare a few hours of their time, please contact the centre on 01822 613746.
