A MAJOR revamp of Tavistock Town Hall?s antiquated kitchen is to take place at the beginning of next year. Tavistock Town Council, which owns the building, has budgeted £25,000 for the work, which it hopes will be completed by the end of March. Town clerk Roger Howard said: ?A long time ago we were told it was now so old we couldn?t get spares and it no longer met with health and safety regulations, so we had to do something about it. ?We?re literally replacing everything in there, the cookers, freezers, gas and electric supplies ? it?s a complete modern make-over.? The work should be treated as urgent, town councillors decided at a meeting last week. Members of the finance committee agreed delegated powers should be given to officers to choose the most favourable tender as soon as possible, rather than waiting for another round of meetings to give the go-ahead. Cllr Norma Woodcock proposed the council?s officers should make a decision ? if there was a problem in choosing the company with the lowest tender, then an ?emergency? meeting between the mayor, the chairman of finance and deputy mayor would choose the preferred tender. ?We must do everything to make sure the work gets done,? she said.
