HAVING sacked much of Cornwall, Devonians in the West are having to face up to a new battle. I am talking about industrial-sized wind turbines, bigger than a 747 jumbo jet, that are the new onslaught in Devon. Lifton is now overshadowed by two of these mobiles-from-Hades. An appeal has just permitted another close by and just three miles from Brent Tor, despite strong opposition. The march continues. Two more potential advances are now planning applications. Wrey's Barton turbine will be adjacent to the conservation village of Stowford with two extraordinary ancient churches. The Ridgecombe turbine will stand lofty on the tall hill south of Lifton and will be visible from Dartmoor National Park, Brent Tor Church, Launceston Castle and beyond. Now, however, your readers might like to know that they can fight without risk to life or limb, by simply writing to West Devon Borough Council objecting to planning applications 00368/2015 and 00336/2015. The size of these turbines is chosen to produce maximum profit for the developers for least electricity production by exploiting an anomaly in the feed in tariff structure. They are paid for by an addition to the electricity bill of each resident so hurting the residents doubly. If you are for green energy then support the erection of efficient turbines that produce more electricity at lower cost in better locations by opposing these that threaten our landscape, heritage and wallets.
