Callington Town Band joined forces with the town's Community Gospel Choir last month to provide a musical feast. The concert was a great success and gave the opportunity for the band to recognize the award winners of the evening. The attendance award was jointly given to Evie Lightbody and Kevin McKane; the training band award was given to Gregory and was presented by Lauren Rossiter, the training band conductor. The Betty and David Restall award went to Cliff McKane for the person who contributed to the smooth running of the band throughout the year. It was presented by the portreeve Andrew Long. The choir, under the leadership of Steve Dawe, performed many interesting items and had the audience joining in. The choir also joined with the band to perform 'You Raise Me Up' and a selection of hymns entitled Praise. Bruce Taylor, marketing manager for Miller Countrywide, presented the Miller Countrywide Award for the most improved performer to Claire Blaze, principal flugel horn player. Mr Taylor presented the band with a cheque for £100 to help with fundraising efforts after the fire in the old band room. Paul Boase, musical director and manager of Miller Countrywide Callington, thanked Mr Taylor and all the individuals and businesses in and around Callington for helping with funds. Mike Jones ran the London Marathon on the Sunday, raising more money for the band, and thanks were passed to him during the concert. Kevin Veal compered the concert and kept the audience entertained between items.
