WEST Devon runner Dave Chanter from recently took time away from his sports injury practice and set off for Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa.
Located in north east Tanzania near the Kenyan border and reaching 19,340ft, Kilimanjaro is an extinct volcano, one of the largest in the world.
Due to its high elevation and proximity to the equator, Kilimanjaro is home to five climate regions.
Beginning at the lower elevations, climbers pass through a dense tropical rainforest, then a savannah, alpine moorland and barren desert before traversing a snowfield en route to the summit.
Said Dave, of Peter Tavy: 'Heading up the mountain with my local guide, William, dripping with perspiration through the humid dense rainforest, we spotted a few screeching colobus monkeys swinging from some branches and heard the melodic calls of the crested hornbill.
'Stepping out onto the open moorlands on day two it was shocking to see how the rainforest abruptly ended.
'Leaving the final camp just after midnight on the fifth day, we set off by torchlight up the long slope toward the crater rim.
'As dawn broke we walked along the expansive snow covered terrace towards the highest point.
'Exhilarated, it was soon time to head back down.
'I had really enjoyed the experience and also raised money for local charities.'
