HERE are just a sample of pictures from the 1960s by former Times photographer, the late Jim Thorington.

Nearly 80,000 of Jim’s pictures from the early 1960s to the late 1990s have been preserved thanks to the Tavistock Local History Society, Tavistock Museum and volunteers who, for the last few years, have been busy uploading Jim’s images from parades to parties and portraits to landscapes to the website www.tavistockhistory.btck.co.uk/Thorington and the Thorington Facebook page. The museum provides a home for the archive and special thanks has been expressed to Dan Gloyn who is responsible for running the Facebook page.

All the pictures have been made available to the Times thanks to the history society and Jim’s widow Shirley Rose who has the copyright.

Information is being sought from the public so the society can eventually add captions to all these photographs — email [email protected] if you can help.

See this week’s Times for more pictures.
