BEEKEEPERS in the Okehampton area have enjoyed a productive and enjoyable year, the annual meeting of enthusiasts heard. Okehampton branch of the Devon Beekeepers' Association held their meeting at Shelley Methodist Hall, South Zeal on November 14. The meeting, well attended by 18 members, heard reports from branch secretary Margaret Harris and treasurer Jim Sampson. Malcolm Craig, show secretary, recalled the branch's excellent presentation of beekeeping and beekeeping products at Okehampton Show in August. The beekeeping marquee had been a 'hive of activity' throughout the day with the branch attracting enquiries from several potential new beekeeping members. Chairman Ray King proposed some ideas for next year's programme. These included sessions, possibly involving the regional bee inspector, to introduce members to techniques of bee-disease recognition. He also suggested an informal training course to prepare members wishing to take the Basic Beekeeping Certificate exam next year. Officers and committee members were re-elected, with all positions being filled. The meeting closed with members enjoying a bring and share supper and the opportunity to discuss the year's beekeeping experiences in an informal setting. The Okehampton section currently has about 50 members and is affiliated as a Branch of Devon Beekeepers. The next meeting is at 7.30pm on Tuesday, December 12 at the Methodist Hall in South Zeal. Jenny Grist will be giving a talk on the subject of Secrets of the Hive.
