THE Victory Hall at Lewdown is celebrating its 50th birthday this year with a week of events to mark the occasion.

The foundation stone of the hall was laid on September 14, 1957, and the hall was opened one year later on September 6, 1958 by Harry Oakes, a radio actor who played 'Dan Archer' in the BBC radio series 'The Archers'.

This year a range of events to suit all ages are being staged — starting with a whist drive, with meat prizes and a raffle, on Saturday, August 30.

On Sunday, August 31 a 'quiz walk', testing entrants' knowledge and observation of the village will start at 2pm at the Rampsonvillas in the centre of Lewdown.

A questionnaire has been compiled and entrants need to answer all the questions. This will be followed by cream teas, served by the ladies of Lewtrenchard WI.

Other events are:

l On Monday, September 1 there will be bingo, and the following day from 2.30pm to 5pm a tea dance, and on Wednesday a side skittles competition at 7.30pm

l On Friday, September 5 the Red Spider Drama Group with the Packhorse Singers will perform from 7pm. Refreshments available

l The farmers' market from 10am to 1pm on Saturday, September 6 will be staged, and in the afternoon the summer fayre at the Recreational Field with Northlew Silver Band, a barbecue, classic cars, a car boot sale and face painting. Refreshments available.

On both the Friday and Saturday events there will be a display of photos of Lewdown from days gone by, compiled by the Lewdown Past Group.

The week of events ends on Saturday, September 6 with an evening social of music, dancing, photo quizzes and a bring and share supper.

All events are being held at the Victory Hall, unless otherwise stated.
