AN exciting new sports programme is being launched for youngsters in the Tavistock area this weekend — with the first session absolutely free! The Saturday morning Multi-skills Club is being run at Tavistock College Sports Centre and is specifically for children aged seven to eleven years of age. Barry Mountstevens, sports centre manager, said the club will provide a wide variety of activities based on improving co-ordination, agility and balance — with the emphasis firmly on fun. Barry said: 'We're basically aiming it at children who are perhaps not quite as able as some, to participate and improve their skills, give them the chance to play games so that in future they feel they are able to join in and not sit on the sidelines.' Barry said he hoped the Saturday club would help prepare youngsters to take part in a healthy, lifelong enjoyment and participation of sport and physical activity and enable everyone taking part to fulfil their potential. He said the course would be led by multi-skills coaches from various backgrounds who would help the children improve their basic core skills and would also identify specific strengths and abilities, matching them to particularly suitable sports. The Multi-skills Club will be held between 11.30am and 1.30pm at Tavistock College Sports Hall, starting this Saturday. There is no charge for the first session — subsequent sessions will cost £2.50. Also of interest to youngsters aged eight to 14 is the half-term holiday club run by the college sports centre, which takes place between February 19 and 23, between 10am and 3.30pm. Barry said: 'For the first time this year we are doing excursions off site — with a canoeing trip and a football day.' The canoeing takes place on Alder Lake on February 20 and the football day on February 22 — pre-booking is advisable.
