THE Napoleonic War blockbuster Master and Commander will be screened in Okehampton next week to open a series of events celebrating the 200th anniversary of Nelson?s victory at Trafalgar. Okehampton Moving Pictures will be showing the blockbuster depicting life on a Royal Navy ship in 1805 next Thursday (October 20). The film stars Russell Crowe as Captain ?Lucky? Jack Aubrey and Paul Bettany as ship?s doctor aboard HMS Surprise. Master and Commander (Cert 12A) will be shown at 7.30pm in the charter hall. The following morning offers the chance to enjoy a breakfast fit for an admiral at the Plume of Feathers in Okehampton. Trafalgar breakfasts will be served up from 8am onwards on Friday, October 21. That evening will see the lighting of the Trafalgar Beacon, built by Okehampton YFC at Meldon. The ceremony is part of a national chain of beacon lightings and will take place at 7.18pm. There will also be a barbecue at Meldon during the evening. Also on Friday, in Red Lion Yard, Okehampton, Wren Music will be hosting a dramatic reconstruction of the Battle of Trafalgar from 7pm. CRAPS Folk Club will face the unenviable task of manoeuvring two large carnival float sized replica boats around the yard, recreating the conflict complete with hand-held flares. A band of musicians will be on hand playing songs and nautical shanties and authentic speeches from the battle will also be delivered. The one-off spectacular will serve as a curtain raiser for Wren?s packed weekend of Baring-Gould Folk Festival events. Following the display, the first folk club event will take place in the Charter Hall featuring performances by a host of top names as well as local youngsters.
