DID you notice: the third of September came and went with scarcely a murmur?
Not on TV, radio nor even in the press did I see mention of the anniversary of Neville Chamberlain?s speech to the nation ending in the words
?. . . therefore we are at war with Germany?.
I am not suggesting that we should in any way celebrate the day when our lives began to change for ever, but surely we should remember it, shouldn?t we?
It?s not that difficult. While our American allies have their 9/11, we have our 3/9/39 and would be well advised to bear it in mind. And, after all, every war memorial in the land carries the poignant inscription, ?Lest We Forget?.
I thought it was worth a mention, that?s all.
