Everyday life in 1980s Calstock is the unexpected yet fascinating subject of an exhibition of photographic work by Malcolm Baldwin, which opens at the village hall this Saturday, April 19. Calstock – a Celebration of Community, travels back to a time of enormous social and political upheaval, where day-to-day activities in the rural village on the Tamar became the antidote to the conspicuous consumption and new individualism generally captured on film by Malcolm through his work as a freelance documentary cameraman. Inspired by James Ravilious, who had already been recording rural life in Mid-Devon for more than a decade, a place with a fascinating mix of social tensions and cohesion, made the people of Calstock a community worth recording and celebrating. The exhibition has been made possible through the Tamar Valley Mining Heritage Project with funding from a range of partner organisations, including the Heritage Lottery Fund. Amazingly, Malcolm has had no formal training as a cameraman or photographer. His advice to anyone who wants to do this kind of work is 'have your dream, and then put one foot in front of the other and keep walking'.
