MORE and more new life appears to be entering West Devon than ever before . . .

This year has seen a 'baby boom' hit Winkleigh while Okehampton Hospital has reported that the number of women giving birth there has trebled across the last seven years.

Figures show that, on average, ten to 15 babies are born each year in Winkleigh but 2008 has seen the village with 30 mothers-to-be.

Theories in the village are ranging from the tried and trusted 'there's something in the water' to couples moving into a new house and celebrating by becoming pregnant.

Meanwhile in Okehampton the news that the number of women giving birth in the hospital has trebled since 2001 has been welcomed by midwifery team leader Elizabeth Jeffery, who is now stepping down after seven years in the role.

Elizabeth said the increase in expectant mothers booking to give birth at Okehampton Hospital was down to the relaxed environment which is unique to a community hospital.

'We have a fantastic team and wonderful facilities, including a lovely birthing pool and en suite single rooms for after the birth,' she said.

'New parents who come to us really appreciate the peaceful surroundings and individual care we are able to give.

'We realise it's important that first-time parents are given confidence in caring for their new baby and we also help in establishing breastfeeding.

'Nationally, there is a shortage of midwives and we are so fortunate here to have a dedicated team and first class support from our midwifery assistants.

'We have been really grateful for the support of the local community in helping us to buy additional equipment, most recently a set of portable baby weighing scales from Waitrose in Okehampton.

'The League of Friends has also donated three hand-held Doppler machines, which are used for listening to a baby's heartbeat in pregnancy and labour.

'I have found the role of team leader rewarding and I'm proud to continue as a member of the team.'

Incoming team leader Wendy Seddon has been working at Okehampton hospital for eleven months.

She said: 'I am absolutely thrilled to have been appointed to the role of midwifery team leader.

'All members of our team are considerate and hardworking and I am looking forward to building on the hard work that has gone into making this a service that the local people can be proud of.'
