WITH the current high profile attention that the fire fighters are getting it does mean that we are being educated in appreciation of their everyday roles.

Last week my neighbours were unfortunate in having a fairly serious fire, and as I was at the scene throughout I experienced first hand what was involved.

Firstly, although Tavistock Fire Station is manned by part-time ?retainers?, they responded to the call out very quickly.

By the time of their arrival, thick black smoke had filled the house.

Assessment of the situation was carried out, and four men went in wearing breathing apparatus, with hoses to extinguish the fire.

They would have little knowledge of anything in the house that could have exploded, and very limited vision to carry out their task.

They were constantly monitored by a co-ordinator outside, but it would be those on the front line that had to put out the fire, making the correct decisions as they were in there, who had their lives at risk. Something that they have to do on a regular basis.

When it was all safe, there was all the mess to clear up, check the adjacent properties, test and refill all the equipment ready for the next incident that could occur any any time.

A most efficient operation that showed real dedication and bravery.

Well done Tavistock Fire and Rescue Service.
