A HOST of West Devon chefs will descend on the Farmers? Market in Tavistock this Saturday ? one of the first in a series of events organised in the wake of the town winning a major regional title. Nearly 150 invites have gone out to local restaurants, pubs and other catering businesses and it is hoped that chefs and cooks will turn out en masse in their chefs? outfits to find out more about local food and where they can source it from. Tavistock last month was named Best Food Town in the South West at a glittering ceremony held in Exeter. The initiative is being organised by the Tavistock Farmers? Market and Westden, with help from Peter Gorton, master chef at the Horn of Plenty Country House Hotel and Restaurant. It is part of the Tavistock EatWise- Eat Local campaign. Peter Gorton said: ?We are lucky to have an abundance of great local produce in this area. More and more of our local chefs are looking for opportunities to devise local menus using seasonal produce. ?This event will give them the confidence and contacts to make that a reality.? Maria Jones, manager of the farmers? market, said it was a great opportunity for local farmers and producers to supply more of their wonderful local food to restaurants and cafes, so more people could benefit from the taste and quality of it when they ate out. Many of the producers are planning demonstrations and tastings at the event, which begins at 10am and continues until noon.
