OKEHAMPTON and North Tawton firefighters were called to put out a blaze in a motorhome which caught fire while travelling along the A30 towards Cornwall.

Devon Fire and Rescue Service received more than 25 calls from motorists and other onlookers alerting them to the fire near the Stowford Cross turning on the A30 mid-morning on Thursday last week (July 16).

Fire crew also attended from Launceston over the border in Cornwall and with a water carrier from Exeter. Wearing breathing apparatus, they used hose reel jets to fight the fire, which gutted the motorhome.

The fire, which was accidental, led to delays in traffic travelling into Cornwall, with the whole carriageway shut for a time and then restricted to just one lane.

The picture above, by a crew member at Okehampton Fire Station, shows the aftermath of the fire.
