BUCKLAND Monachorum Parish Council will be saying farewell to one of its longest standing members after several decades of service.

Richard White was co-opted onto the council in 1966 and after 45 years of serving on the authority he has decided it is time to step down.

Richard said: 'I'm coming up to 78 so I think it's time to give it over to the younger ones.

'I've been chairman a few times and have thoroughly enjoyed my time on the council. I'm going to miss the councillors — I've made such good friends.'

The councillors had a toast to Richard at his last ever meeting and told stories about his time with the council.

As well as Richard, five other councillors have decided not to re-stand, including Marilyn Allen, who has been a member for 24 years, David Simkins, a member for 18 years and parish council clerk Elaine Simkins.

The remaining six councillors will be automatically re-appointed in the next elections but the parish council is now looking for six co-opted members to make up the full 12.

Any local electorate interested in joining the council should contact the new clerk Debbie Ashton, from May 1, on the new parish council number 01822 841648.
